Thousands of pagers explode at once, and a new and terrifying kind of warfare is born
Across Lebanon, in pockets and on belts, the pagers Hezbollah used to evade surveillance detonated in the same instant, then the walkie-talkies the next day. Thousands were maimed. It was an attack on the supply chain itself, and it changes what a device in your pocket means.
In an operation without real precedent, thousands of pagers carried by members of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah exploded simultaneously across the country on September 17, followed the next day by a wave of exploding walkie-talkies, killing dozens, including children, and wounding thousands, many maimed in the hands, face and eyes. The devices, it emerged, had been compromised at the source: Israel, by the near-universal assessment, had infiltrated Hezbollah's supply chain, planting small charges in the pagers before they ever reached their users, and then triggered them all at once. Hezbollah had switched to pagers precisely to avoid the phone surveillance it knew Israel excelled at; the low-tech choice became the trap. The group was left reeling, its communications shattered, its members afraid to touch their own equipment, and days later Israel escalated with heavy airstrikes on Lebanon, the long-feared wider war lurching closer.
The military ingenuity was undeniable, and so was the horror, thousands of casualties from devices that detonated in markets, homes and hospitals, wherever their owners happened to be, with no way to know who was holding one. But beyond the immediate carnage and the escalation it drove, the operation announced something with implications far past this war, and it is the thing that should unsettle everyone: an attack not on a network or a system but on the physical supply chain, on the devices themselves, compromised in the factory or the warehouse before they were ever switched on. It is a demonstration, at horrifying scale, that the objects we carry and trust can be turned against us at their point of origin, and that the long, opaque, global supply chains that produce all our devices are a vulnerability no firewall can patch.
